What size and weight can my trailer be?

See the maximum dimensions (under section 'Trailer size') for a light trailer or caravan to make sure it'll fit in the inspection bay.

Eligibility

To register a light trailer or caravan in your personal name:

Be at least 17 years old.
The trailer/caravan needs to weigh 4.5 tonnes or less (Gross Vehicle Mass).

To register a light trailer or caravan in the name of a company or incorporated association:

A company needs to provide an Australian Company Number (ACN) or Australian Registered Business Number (ARBN) to be eligible.
Incorporated associations will not have an ACN or ARBN but may be incorporated in a number of ways e.g. through an Act of Parliament or by Royal Charter. They may include organisations such as hospitals, municipal councils or trade unions.

Trailers can't be registered in the name of an unincorporated group. If the trailer's owned by an unincorporated body, multiple people or an emergency response organisation (eg the SES or CFA), an individual may be nominated as the registered operator.

Trailer plates & VIN

Trailers manufactured from 1 July 1989 need a trailer compliance plate to be permanently affixed to the trailer in a position where it may be readily examined. See Trailer compliance plate & VIN (under section Trailer size) for more details about this.

Trailers also need a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or chassis number. This number needs to be stamped, embossed, or otherwise permanently marked on a substantial part of the trailer's frame or chassis.

Bring to your appointment

The trailer or caravan.
A completed vehicle registration form.
Your evidence of identity.
Evidence of Victorian garaged address.
If someone else is registering the vehicle on your behalf, they will need to provide an original and signed Authority to act as an agent form.
Appropriate tools to remove your old number plates and put the new ones on. They'll need to be fitted to your vehicle before you leave VicRoads. Note that screws won't be provided with your new number plates.
If you're converting your registration from interstate, bring the interstate number plates. We'll safely destroy them and give you an official receipt that says they've been returned.

Important reminders

If you're late to your appointment or you haven't booked the correct appointment type for your vehicle, you won't be able to get it registered.
If you don't bring the correct documents with you, you won't be able to register your vehicle or get a refund of your appointment fees.
