Will I need an inspection?
We won't need to inspect your vehicle:
- If it was previously registered in your name in Victoria (and none of the vehicle's details have changed).
- If you're converting your vehicle's registration from interstate, the car still has the interstate number plates attached and is currently registered, or expired less than 3 months ago.
In all other cases, you'll need to book an inspection to register your vehicle.
Eligibility
To register a light vehicle in your personal name:
- You need to be at least 16 years old (or 18 years for a motorcycle).
- The vehicle needs to weigh less than 4.5 tonnes (Gross Vehicle Mass).
To register a light vehicle in the name of a company or incorporated association:
- A company needs to provide an Australian Company Number (ACN) or Australian Registered Business Number (ARBN) to be eligible.
- Incorporated associations will not have an ACN or ARBN but may be incorporated in a number of ways e.g. through an Act of Parliament or by Royal Charter. They may include organisations such as hospitals, municipal councils or trade unions.
A vehicle can't be registered in the name of an unincorporated group. If the vehicle's owned by an unincorporated body, multiple people, or an emergency response organisation (e.g. the SES or CFA), an individual can be nominated as the registered operator.
In Victoria, vehicles can only be registered in one name.
If the vehicle is registered in more than one name interstate, you'll need to provide:
- Proof that you're one of the registered operators i.e. a registration certificate which shows your name as a joint registered operator and
- An original letter from the other registered operator/s which says they're happy for the vehicle to be registered in your name.
